Fern Smith, a local artist of Coburg North presents a queer take on mermaids.
During the past decade, Smith has been changing her art practice to include sustainable environmentally safe methods of creativity. Smith is showcasing sustainable methods utilising traditional Asian technique of watercolour on cotton and presented on a scroll. The method of applying water colour to cotton varies slightly in each regional area from the Middle East across to India through Asia and on to Japan. Smith researched and practiced these applications and found the Northern Indian technique suited her style of artwork.
Smith is driven by the need to explore and enquire about equality. Mermaids ‘Hooked’ ‘The Calling” and "Ms Joy" seek connections between ancient folklore, equality and queerness.
